Saif Ali Khan has opted to play safe with his first production venture, Love Aaj Kal, by opting to fall back on concepts that have worked for him in the recent past with focus on the young generation mindset and relationships.
So there are traces of Dil Chahta Hai to Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na with shades of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna where even marriage does not stop the heart from exploring the past. For added measure there is a foreigner angle and the tale told with another story from the past a la Rang De Basanti style.
But this is not a review of the movie.
Including Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the movie is part of Bollywood’s willingness to depict a trend which is prevalent, even by the most ambitious estimates, in an absolute minority in India’s cultural and traditional fibre.
But if there is no smoke without fire, it means that the movies are defying the age-old myth in Indian culture: Marriage is an institution, a sacred one.
But it is not a tent either. So far, the trendy movies have had a happy ending with the protagonists separating conveniently till they find a mutual solution. Like Saif says in the movie, “there should be options”.
But the next challenge would be depicting life of those who are stuck in marriage and don’t have the ‘option’ of turning back the clock like the married Deepika Padukone gets.
